I had zero expectations for the Brook & The Bluff's opener, Savannah Conley, back in April. But man, was I wrong about Conley. She knocked my socks off in Athens and has now done it again with her debut album Playing the Part of You is Me.
Conley grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, seemingly destined to in the country music scene by her music industry parents. After giving artistry a shot in 2018, Conley quit producing singles for a while until the pandemic brought forth new emotions that were perfect song inspiration. This album is her true debut into the indie world that undoubtedly suits her well.
The title track is entitled Help Myself. Conley sings about waiting on her lover and wanting to be there for him even though he continuously hurt her. Finally, she sings "I need help / but can't help myself." The piano melody is fierce and swallows in listeners, quickly realizing how relatable this song truly is. Stronger and stronger instrumentals flow in, as Conley's passion increases with each note.
Muscle Memory is next - a heart felt ballad about letting go of what once was. She no longer loves him, but her body longs to be with him because of the normalcy. She "wants to feel something / when everything is falling apart." Personally, I agree with Conley as she sings "can you blame me?" However, her hurt is crystal clear here as she attempts to rekindle what was already burnt out.
Then comes Contortionist with a lively drumbeat, completely changing the first two tracks' instrumentation. Conley is struggling to fit the expectations of others both musically and personally. She realizes satisfying everyone is not plausible - "convince myself into the box I built / but I just won't fit."
More Than Fine is Conley in her "new and improved" form - her best self that is. It honestly kind of sounds like she is flirting as she sings, "you'll be fine on your own / but just a little better with me." More psychedelic than the other songs - More Than Fine fits Conley's new indie genre perfectly.
These songs and 7 more are on the track. All the songs were written by Savannah Conley and produced by Jeremy Lutito.
